This 8 days safari from Kilimanjaro airport starts by taking you to Arusha town and then into Tanzania national parks of Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. The trip further takes you to Zanzibar islands where you will visit Stone Town and enjoy beach stay and getting up close with giant turtles in Prison Island.
This is a great way to see the wildlife and explore the beautiful landscapes of Tanzania. The highlights will be the great wildebeest migration in Serengeti between June to September and big five mammals in Ngorongoro crater. And also the cultural experience of the host communities – the Masai people who live around Serengeti National park.
Day 1: Arrival.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport, your tour guide/driver will meet and transfer you to the hotel in Arusha town. Check in and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Following hot African breakfast, leave Arusha town and transfer to Ngorongoro conservation area. Expect to arrive early afternoon on time for lunch. After a while, in the evening go into the crater, a UNESCO world heritage site known for its 30,000 population of mammals. The landscape dominated by savannah plains, swamps, thickets and water pools are a beauty to behold.
The 4×4 game drive safari takes you through the crater to see buffaloes, giraffe, lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and if you are lucky spot the elusive black rhino and African wild dog. Thereafter, return to your lodge for diner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Full day Ngorongoro crater game viewing.
If at all you missed to spot some of the big five mammals, today gives second chance with early morning and afternoon game drives. Enjoy breakfast and picnic lunch inside the crater at the hippo pool where you might see lots of game at the waterholes cooling their bodies. Later in the evening return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Ngorongoro to Serengeti National Park.
Another early morning game drive into the crater which will end by 10am. After breakfast, you will leave Ngorongoro for Serengeti National Park. The journey is interesting taking you through Masai villages to capture fascinating views of the country side. You could also opt to visit Olduvai Gorge – the place where fossils of the earliest humans were discovered by Dr. Louis Leakey.
You will drive to Serengeti National Park and check in your lodge for late lunch situated in Seronera valley – central part of the park. This park is famous for the wildebeest migration – one of the greatest wildlife shows on earth. The other highlights of Serengeti are big five African mammals; the rhino, cape buffalo, African elephant, lion and leopard, as well as Masai giraffe, topi, hyena, eland and many more mammals could be seen.
Serengeti is also a paradise for the bird watchers, with over 500 species of birds recorded in the park including the ostrich and the Kori bustard, the largest flying bird in the world.
Upon finishing your lunch, you will go for an evening game drive in search of mammals till the sunsets. Then go back to the lodge – dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Full Day in Serengeti National Park.
Today, you have the option to do either a hot air balloon safari rides or game drive which you will begin around 6am early morning which lasts until sunset.
The highlight of your day will be to see the great migration which will require you to follow the animals depending on which part of the park they will be. In western part of Serengeti, the wildebeest can be seen crossing the crocodile infested Grumeti River between June and September. And in December to February it’s the calving season for wildebeest in southern part of Serengeti.
Besides the migration, you may see a variety of mammals such as zebras, elephant, giraffe, hippos, eland, topi, impala, and many more savanna and woodlands bird species. Sightings of predators are also common in the central and western Serengeti including lion, leopard, wild dog, hyena and serval cats.
Dinner awaits you at the lodge and overnight.
Day 6: Flight to Zanzibar Islands.
After breakfast early morning go for your final game drive in the vast plains of Serengeti. A variety of wildlife can be seen plus sunrise and thereafter return to the lodge.
Alternatively, you can opt to have a cultural experience that will get you in touch with the masai warriors. Interact with them as they show you their cultural traditions such as music and dance, tools like grazing stick and colorful beads.
Thereafter, you will have breakfast and transfer to Seronera airstrip and take a flight to Zanzibar airport. Expect to arrive late afternoon. Your Zanzibar guide will pick you up and transfer to your hotel for late lunch in Stone town.
In the evening, you will take a walk along the palm lined Porsche beach to catch an African sunset. Dinner and your lodge. After dinner you could go for a night life market experience at Johnny gardens formerly known as Forodhani market.
Day 7: Stone town tour and Prison Island.
Following breakfast, you will embark on a tour of this old town. Visit the house of wonders which is the tallest of the buildings, Old fort where you can attend a music festival (happening in January and June) and have lunch at Lukman restaurant.
After lunch, take a boat trip to Prison Island a former slave prison turned into a giant turtle conservation center. There, you will see the turtles up close and spend overnight at beach resort where you can do snorkeling. Dinner and overnight at Beach resort prison island.
Day 8: Departure.
After breakfast, you will take a boat bring you back to Stone town. Depending on your flight departure, if there’s time you could visit the spice plantations to see different spices such as nutmeg, cloves among other grown.
