7 Days Rwanda Congo Gorilla Special


This is a once in a lifetime experience offering you a chance to see two species of gorillas, the mountain gorillas and the lowland gorillas. This 7 Days Rwanda Congo Gorilla Special safari, takes you through the Virunga Mountains where you will track mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda before crossing the border to eastern DR Congo for the second mountain gorilla tracking in Virunga National Park well as visit Kahuzi-Biega National Park to track the lowland gorillas.

You will also visit the host communities in Rwanda plus lots of flora and fauna that you will get to experience and the beautiful natural landscapes you will get to explore.

Detailed tour

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

You will be picked from Kigali airport and travel for approximately 2 hours to Musanze province through rolling hills.

Arrive at your lodge in volcanoes national park home to 10 habituated gorilla families making it ideal place for your gorilla tracking adventure the following morning. The park is also home to golden monkeys and over 168 species of birds.

Check in your lodge and appreciate the view of 3 dormant Virunga volcanic mountains that are found in Volcanoes National Park. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and cultural tour

In the morning, you will wake at 06am to have breakfast. Prepare yourself for the gorilla trek by having packed lunch, drinking water and not forgetting your face mask. Leave the hotel to Kinigi where visitors gather for briefing on how to behave while with the gorillas. The rangers will go on to allocate and lead you in search of a gorilla family while exploring the flora in the jungle. The time it takes to find the gorillas depends on where the gorillas move while feeding. Finally, when you find the gorillas, you will be given 1 hour to observe and take photos of the gentle giants. It will be a memorable experience thereafter, return to Kinigi before proceeding to your lodge for lunch.

Following our itinerary after lunch, you will visit the local community for Rwandan cultural experience at Iby’Iwacu cultural village. Here, you will visit a museum exhibiting the heritage of Rwanda and try dressing in a traditional attire for photos as King or queen. Thereafter, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.  

Day 3: Transfer to Virunga National Park – D.R. Congo

Today, your trip will continue to Democratic Republic of Congo. After breakfast, early in the morning you will embark on a transfer crossing via Goma border. With your DR Congo visa you will register for entrance and purchase gorilla permits. Proceed through Goma town to Virunga National Park.

You arrive at your lodge and check in by mid-afternoon. By the rest of the day you will be organizing for your gorilla trekking following day early morning.

Virunga National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site home to mountain gorillas. There are 6 habituated gorilla families in the southern part of the park which is the most densely forested, mountainous and remote. You will be in one of Africa’s richest biodiversity hotspots. Virunga Park is also home to chimpanzees, forest elephants, over 600 bird species, a variety of flora species making it an ideal place for nature lovers.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking – Virunga National Park

Following breakfast, leave the lodge going to the ranger patrol station in Bukima which is the starting point for gorilla treks. Here, you will be briefed on the dos and don’ts of seeing gorillas including putting on the face masks.

Thereafter, embark on the awesome but challenging gorilla trek due to the thick vegetation in the park. After the gorillas are found, you will be allowed to spend 1 hour taking photos and observing how they feed and play. After exploring the gorillas, you return to the lodge for lunch.

If staying at Mikeno lodge, in the afternoon you could go for nature walks searching for forest birds, primates, flora, butterflies and on a lucky day wild chimpanzees.

Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 5: Transfer to Bukavu – Kahuzi Biega National Park

After your breakfast, check out and transfer to Kahuzi-Biega National park for lowland gorilla trekking adventure. You will reach Bukavu town and make a stopover, which is 30 km away from the park. Arrive at your lodge and check in for lunch and relaxation. Optional nature walks in the afternoon.

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is home to lowland gorillas which are endemic to this region. Also known as grauer’s gorilla, it is largest of the four gorilla subspecies. This park has two lowland gorilla families that have been habituated.

You will be tracking these giants with the help of the park rangers. However, the trek will be challenging due to the thick jungle and mountainous terrain as the park is dominated by dormant volcanoes Mt. Kahuzi and Mt. Biega rising at 3308 meters above sea level, joined with Congo basin forests.

Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 6: Lowland gorilla trekking

Breakfast is served early in the morning from your lodge and transfer to the park visitor center to begin your lowland gorilla tracking adventure. The lowland gorilla is the largest of the four gorilla subspecies so tracking them will give you a picture of their physical appearance. Return to the park center before lunch at your lodge.

In the afternoon, you can opt to go for a walk through the communities, tea plantations to visit Tshibati waterfalls where you expect to encounter many bird and floral species. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.   

Day 7: Departure

After breakfast, you will transfer back to Kigali and connect to the airport for your departure flight.
